Knights of Freedom Summit
The boys are in a homeschool boys book club called Knights of Freedom. There are small groups all over of up to about 10boys per group that read, discuss and enjoy activities together twice a month for a couple of hours. This year, the boys have been reading about Lou Gehrig, Jim Thorpe & Teddy Roosevelt.
For the past 7 years these small groups have come together for two days of fun in what they call, Summit. They learn knighthood values (this year's focus was on SACRIFICE), make pretty fancy shields and swords and then invite their families to come and watch them in battle and enjoy a feast afterward. The battle was pretty impressive. They have it scripted to have villains and good guys (the boys) with the boys winning the battle.
The boys loved that their daddy got roped into being a villain. They each had several opportunities to fight him. Although Lou resisted the call initially, he had a great time in the end (I have a close up picture of him smiling and having a good time on my camcorder--PROOF!). :)
Can you see Damian in the middle there?
At one point, the weather made a quick change and poured on us like CRAZY! We all huddled in the covered pavilion until it passed. The boys weren't so lucky; they weren't being covered by a pavilion. They actually said a prayer as a group so that the battle could go on and directly after the prayer, the rain stopped.
Liam was a pretty good sport on this cold outing!
While they were training the villains, they had activities for the families of the boys to keep them busy. Emma & Isaiah had a great time getting their faces, and hands painted, making mini swords and playing on the playground.
What a great couple of days Gehrig & Damian had! I'm glad they were able to participate and that Lou was able to join them for the battle.
